Summary of the book: Last Sunday, Alexander's grandparents gave him a dollar -- and he was rich. There were so many things he could do with all of that money! He could buy as much gum as he wanted, or even a walkie-talkie, if he saved enough. But somehow the money began to disappear....
I would use this book as an introduction to subtraction. I could have students working in groups using coin manipulatives to follow the disappearance of Alexander's money. Students could also discuss topics such as the importance of saving as well as comparing prices of items from year ago to those of today.
