Anno’s Mysterious Multiplying Jar

Authors: Masaichiro and Mitsumasa Anno

Illustrator: Mitsumasa Anno

Recommended Grade Level: 4-7

NCTM Standard: Number and Operations, Algebra

Summary:
The story begins with a single jar. Inside the jar is water, which soon becomes “a wide, deep sea.” On the pages that follow, the authors begin a factorial; “On the sea was 1 island. On the island there were 2 countries. Within each country there were 3 mountains.” And so on. On every page, another number is added to the factorial and a picture is included to represent the new number. At the end of the story, the authors explain 10! or 10 factorial.

Suggestions for Using Book with Students:
The teacher could begin by reading the story to the students. While reading, he/she could ask students to predict what will come next. Afterwards, the class could work together to try to use factorials to find out amusing or useful things that are relevant to their lives. My mentor teacher has her students write and illustrate an example of a factorial, following the format of the book.
